11.6-Inch Widescreen Display

The 11.6-inch LED-backlit display (1366 x 768 pixels) presents true 16:9 aspect ratio with high-def resolution and fast 8ms (millisecond) response time for high-quality media playback as well as increased readability in low-light conditions. And the LED backlight technology is 33 percent more energy efficient than standard CCFL LCD screens.

Power-Sipping Processor

Newly designed from the ground up, the Intel Atom Z520 uses a 45nm (nanometer) design structure with new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--to conserve even more energy and give you more time away from the wall outlet. The Intel Atom Z520 provides a 1.3 GHz CPU speed with a 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 512 KB L2 cache--which uses just 2 watts of power. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) It supports Intel's 64-bit computing architecture, which can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory with compatible 64-bit software, as well as Intel's Hyper-Threading technology for speedier multitasking.

The Multi-Gestured Acer Aspire One

A Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows you to pinch, flick and swirl your fingers across the touchpad for more natural photo and video viewing as well as intuitive navigation of websites. The Multi-Gesture Touchpad enables you to scroll, zoom in and out and flip through web pages, photos, spreadsheets and more.

The TouchPad can also be disabled with a one-touch button, eliminating accidental cursor movement with palms and wrists when using an external mouse.

5 out of 5 stars Nice little toy   October 23, 2009
Dimitar Blagoev
Got my netbook without any hassle, good service and communication.

About the Acer itself - it well worth the money. It does very well all that a netbook should do, and a bit slow on things that it's not designed to do. I like the full size keyboard a lot, the light weight... and works for ever on battery. Great companion for frequent travelers.

If your eyes are weak I wold suggest getting a full size laptop - even on the "huge" 11.6" screen things are a bit small. Your eyes will get tired if you stare at it for an extended periods of time.

Over all, so far so good!

5 out of 5 stars Great Netbook   September 27, 2009

Battery life closer to 6 hours. Very happy with this computer. I always felt smaller screen would be less acceptable but the light weight, large drive and convenience far outweighs a smaller screen. I do not see myself with 15" laptops again.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT NETBOOK! BEACH CAMERA: BAD SERVICE   September 18, 2009

Gave this as a gift to my significant other about a week ago after purchasing it for $389.00 from Beach Camera. I am now distressed to see that after only 10 days that the priced dropped by 50 dollars! I sent an email to Beach Camera and am hoping that they do the right thing.
(Update: Beach Camera Responded:Guess no lens from them for me)

Especially since I am considering buying an 800 dollar Sigma lens from them via Amazon again.
I will keep you posted and update this review based on their response. Now to the product itself:
My significant other loves it! She was jazzed by the color of the exterior which is ruby red and by the size and convenience of the netbook itself.
She loves that she can Skype with her family in California via the webcam and that we were able to download MSOffice so she could use it for work. The battery does last as advertised and the screen quality is great! It does come bundled with a bunch of software offers and startup software but once we removed those or turned them off via MSConfig we had a pretty smooth running machine. All in all she is VERY pleased with this item. The only downside was the aforementioned software that had be removed and the screen has already gone black once during use. Apparently this can be a common problem among the Acer brand netbooks. We just rebooted however and the netbook has operated fine for a few days now.
We hope that will not be an ongoing problem but will definitely let you know.
From our initial use of the product we do recommend it!
Again GREAT product but order directly from Amazon they know how to treat customers who drop several hundred dollars. Guess Beach Camera doesnt think I am worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Cute, but a Little Short on Power   September 29, 2009

(About 2 and 1/2 stars)

On the plus side...

The red color is fun. The size is really great for portability. The built in camera and mic worked well with Skype. Nice for on-the-go.

The battery life seems really good so far. And it's really cheap for a computer.

The 11 inch screen is even large and bright and clear.

Keep in Mind: NETbook is a word that was coined to distinguish this from a NOTEbook. And there is a pretty big difference. These cute little Netbooks ARE less powerful than notebooks. ... a LOT less powerful. They are made to work on the 'net. And that only requires a modest amount of computing power. So they are built from the ground up to do just that much. Don't buy these to do business tasks. The smaller sized keyboard would probably frustrate a student while trying to do a paper or any serious work. Note-taking, email, surfing (*with the exception of some video problems) are about all.

On the down side...

While most surfing is fine it seemed to have trouble with full screen Youtube and Hulu video for some reason. (Even though video from [...], for example, was fine at full screen.) I don't have an external DVD player suitable for testing its performance on DVD movies. This shortcoming seems to be a notable blow to this machine. I would think that Youtube and Hulu would be expected uses for the Netbook. I even thought this might be a nice companion to a flat panel monitor to use as a source of video from the net (Youtube, Hulu, Netflix). But it is NOT satisfying to watch the jerky video (1 or 2 frames per second rather than the smooth 20-30 frames of a standard def TV).

Even more surprising... It's so underpowered that sometimes its response is SO slow that you don't know whether the computer has "heard" you or not. This makes you have to decide to either hit the button again or wait to see if it will respond. Not knowing means that you are wasting effort either way.

Software offerings are weak - mostly trial versions.

In Summary... This should NOT be considered an alternative to a more expensive NOTEbook. It is useful in a very limited realm and even has a few flaws within that realm.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Manufacturer Support   December 2, 2009

I purchased this computer to use when I travel for checking emails and reviewing mapping to plan travels.

Shortly after receipt of this computer it began to show symptoms of what I believe was a bad hard drive. After trying to talk to an individual of limited English (at least something a mid-westerner can understand)skills I was given a RMA to send the unit to Texas for service. There was no sending me a replacement hard drive or other item as I experienced with another manufacturer; I asked and it wasn't going to happen.

I typed up a nice cover letter including the RMA information and pointed out that the computer should be returned to my new address rather than the address that was entered when registering the computer purchase.

Acer had this computer at their facilities for a full week before sending the repaired unit back to me according to their email notifications of receipt and return. Must have a lot of broken computers to repair ahead of mine;-)

Imagine my surprise when I followed the tracking number Acer noted in the return shipping notice and found FedEx was sending this to my old address! Now in order to talk to any one in Texas you must first talk to someone in India or Pakistan first. After another 20 minutes of on-hold time and "please repeat that telephone number, I can't understand you" I got transferred to Texas. There I was told my cover letter was a waste of time, that no one would have read it All the receiving clerk cared about was the RMA. Now of course if someone actually read all of my letter and acted on the request to ship to my new address I would have received the repaired computer back in about two weeks instead of three and a half weeks. That delay is not FedEx's fault but Acer's alone.

When the computer arrived finally it was poorly packed and loose inside the crushed carton as well as NO cover letter explaining what repairs where made.

Well it works, as I am writing this review on it it now and seems to be working quite well since Acer replaced the hard drive; but then how am I to know what they fixed!

Now that I have vented I will say that I think the computer itself is what Acer claims it is and is fun to use. There is a lot of getting used to the keyboard and key spacing, I hit a wrong key frequently. But the dealing with Acer warranty repair and their BS practices has made me firmly decided to not make this mistake again.
